Therapy for Teens

You feel the expectations of others (friends, teachers, parents, etc.) are too much to deal with, you don't know "who" to be.

You find yourself caught up in your mind, thoughts are racing, it is exhausting!

OR

Your teen is distant, spending more time on their own than they do with others.

You feel helpless to help them, they are shutting you out by either ignoring you or lashing out emotionally.

The adolescent years can be some of the most difficult years of our lives, both for the teen and their parents. The transformation that occurs during adolescence is confusing and all encompassing. Trying to navigate through this difficult time brings a whole set of new challenges that can leave you feeling helpless and uncertain of what lies ahead.

It isn't uncommon for teens to need help dealing with relationships, emotions, family problems, academic concerns and/or social stress. These demands can lead to self-esteem issues, anxiety in social situations, difficulty regulating emotions, and inappropriate coping skills (ex: cutting/self-harm).  As a parent, this can be scary to witness, as a teen it can be completely overwhelming. At Dragonfly, we specialize in providing therapy for teen girls, with unique knowledge of the brain and behaviour changes that occur during this stage of development.

Our individual counseling sessions are designed to empower adolescent girls to express themselves freely in a confidential and non-judgmental environment. Our skilled psychologists work collaboratively with each individual to address a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Depression

  • Body image issues

  • Self-esteem and identity development

  • Academic and peer-related challenges

  • Social skills and communication

How Do I Know if my Teen Might Need Therapy?

It’s not always easy to tell when a teen is struggling — many young people mask their emotions or shut down when they’re overwhelmed. Here are some signs your teen may benefit from counselling:

  • Persistent sadness, irritability, or mood swings

  • Frequent anxiety, panic, or excessive worry

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Difficulty concentrating or drop in school performance

  • Low self-esteem or frequent self-criticism

  • Increased conflict at home or school

  • Self-harm, talk of hopelessness, or expressions of feeling like a burden

  • Big life changes (like divorce, bullying, loss, or transitions)

You don’t need to wait for a crisis to seek help. Teen counselling can be helpful not only for serious concerns like teenage anxiety or depression, but also as a preventative space for emotional growth, coping, and building confidence.

But Have Some Questions...

What is teen therapy and how can it help?

Teen counselling gives young people a space to explore what’s going on in their inner world — without fear of judgment or pressure to "have it all figured out."

Whether a teen is struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, self-esteem, or social issues, therapy helps them understand their feelings, build coping tools, and feel more confident in who they are.

Our approach is always age-appropriate, supportive, and centered around each teen’s needs.

What kind of teen issues does Dragonfly help with?

We support teen girls with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, family or peer relationships, body image, self-harm, school pressure, perfectionism, and more. Many of our clients come in for therapy for anxiety or depression, but often we’re also exploring identity, boundaries, and how to manage life’s pressures in healthier ways. No issue is “too small” — if something is affecting your teen’s well-being, we’re here to help.

How is teen therapy different from therapy for adults?

Teens are in a unique stage of development — still forming their identity, emotional skills, and sense of self.

Our teen counselling approach reflects that. We build strong, respectful relationships with our teen clients and focus on creating emotional safety first.

We also collaborate with parents or caregivers when helpful (and with the teen’s consent) to support change both in and outside the therapy room.

Will I (as a parent) be involved in the therapy process?

It depends on the teen’s age and needs — and we always involve the teen in that conversation. For younger teens, we often involve parents more actively in the therapy process, while older teens may want more privacy. We work hard to strike the right balance: supporting your teen’s independence while also keeping you informed in meaningful ways. Our priority is your teen’s trust, safety, and well-being.

At Dragonfly, our therapists specialize in building a trusting, non-judgmental relationship by meeting teens where they are at, not pushing them too far, which creates safety in session to explore. We have been providing counselling services to teens in Calgary since 2017.

Learning effective coping strategies creates resilience.  Understanding how unhelpful thought patterns impact our reality plants the seeds of change.  Being able to feel confident in your true self can be such a relief.

Change is possible, and when therapy is successful at this age it helps to set the individual up for success as an adult, as they have developed new skills to use for the rest of their lives.
