Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE FIRST SESSION?

It is common to feel nervous prior to the first counselling session, it can be awkward to speak with a stranger about personal information. As a result, we spend much of the first session focused on building a positive therapeutic relationship with you, discussing as much or as little of your presenting concern as you are comfortable with. The most important information to talk about in the first session is the reason you are seeking counselling, and what you are hoping to gain through the counselling process. Necessary paperwork is completed during this session as well.

HOW LONG DOES EACH SESSION LAST?

Each counselling session is approximately 50 minutes in duration, this allows for paperwork and prep within the hour.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We charge $220/session for sessions with our Registered Psychologists and $190/session for sessions with our Provisionally Registered Psychologists. We also offer low cost counselling with our gradutate intern for $50/session.

to visit our Fees page for more information.

HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO ATTEND COUNSELLING?

This is a difficult question to answer as it is dependent on many variables.  Individuals will differ greatly in their therapeutic needs, financial resources, and scheduling constraints. The suggested frequency of visits will be discussed during the first session, however, this will always be directed by your choice. Some examples of frequency are weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly.

HOW CAN I PAY? DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

Fees may be paid by cash, e-transfer, debit card, or credit card. Payment is expected at the end of each session.  Psychological services are not covered by Alberta Health Care, however, most extended health plans will reimburse you for some or all of the service costs. The receipt for the session will include the necessary information required to process your extended health claim. The amount you are reimbursed will depend on your plan, please call your provider to determine this amount.  In addition, therapy is a tax deductible medical expense and can be claimed as such on your income tax return.

DO YOU DIRECT BILL TO ANY INSURANCE COMPANIES?

Yes, direct billing is currently offered to the following companies (when booking with one of our Registered

Psychologists, at this time Provisional Psychologists can only direct bill to Alberta Blue Cross):

*Sunlife and Manulife do not allow direct billing from any Psychologists at this time, however, a receipt will be provided to you so that you can claim the session and be reimbursed.*

DO YOU HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?

We do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, meaning that we require at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel/reschedule your appointment.  If there is a cancellation inside the 24 hour window, you will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. No show appointments with no notice are billed at the full rate.

WHAT IS A "Provisionally Registered Psychologist"?

The process to become a Registered Psychologist includes completing 1600hrs under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist and the completion of two licensing exams.  While an individual is completing this process they are labelled a Provisionally Registered Psychologist.  As a result of their level of experience, they usually charge a reduced rate.  The reduced rate at Dragonfly is $190/session.
